Casket and aircraft: body repatriation from Kenya to another country

Outbound repatriation

Who we help

We arrange international repatriation from Kenya for:

  • Visitors and tourists who die while in Kenya
  • Expatriates, students and workers living in Kenya
  • Kenyans whose family wish the burial to be where they lived abroad
  • Families sending cremated remains (ashes) to another country

The family can be in Kenya or abroad. We coordinate with the embassy and the receiving funeral home so that no one has to travel to arrange the paperwork.

Requirements

Documents usually needed in Kenya

  1. Kenyan death certificate
  2. Burial permit
  3. Post-mortem report and police abstract, if the death was sudden or unnatural
  4. Embalming certificate
  5. Certificate that the casket is sealed and fit for air transport
  6. The deceased's passport
  7. No-objection letter or clearance from the destination country's embassy or high commission
  8. Public health permit to export human remains
  9. Airline cargo booking and air waybill

Some destinations ask for extra documents, such as translations or a certificate that the deceased did not have an infectious disease. We confirm the full list with the embassy for your case.

FAQs

Sending a loved one abroad from Kenya: common questions

A foreign national has died in Kenya. Where do we start?

Call or WhatsApp us, and contact the deceased's embassy or high commission in Nairobi. We work with the hospital or mortuary, the embassy and the airline, and explain each step to the family abroad.

What documents are needed to send a body out of Kenya?

Usually the Kenyan death certificate, the burial permit, an embalming certificate, a certificate that the casket is sealed, the deceased's passport, a no-objection letter or clearance from the destination country's embassy, and the public health permit to export human remains. A post-mortem report and police abstract are also needed if the death was sudden or unnatural.

Is embalming required?

Yes, for international air transport the body is normally embalmed and placed in a sealed, airline-approved casket. We coordinate embalming with a licensed professional and supply the embalming certificate.

How long does it take?

It depends mainly on how quickly the death is registered, whether a post-mortem is needed, and how fast the embassy issues its clearance. We give the family a realistic estimate once we know the details, and update you at every stage.

Can we send cremated remains abroad instead?

Yes. We can arrange cremation in Nairobi and then send the ashes abroad with the cremation and death certificates, or prepare them for a family member to carry, subject to the airline's rules.

How much does it cost to repatriate a body from Kenya?

The cost depends on the destination, the airline's cargo charges, embalming and the casket, documents and embassy fees. Tell us the destination and we will explain each cost before anything is booked.

Do you work with the funeral home at the destination?

Yes. We agree the handover with the receiving funeral home before the flight, send them copies of the documents, and confirm when your loved one has arrived.

Can a Kenyan who lived abroad be buried abroad?

Yes. If the family wishes the burial to be where the deceased lived abroad, the process is the same: we prepare your loved one, complete the documents and coordinate with the airline and the receiving funeral home.
